养马岛，地处黄海之中，总面积约10平方公里，距烟台市区30公里。
据史载，公元前219年，秦始皇东巡途经此地，见岛上水草茂盛，群马奔腾，视为宝地，便指令在此养马，专供皇家御用。养马岛由此得名。岛内东侧另有小岛，状若巨象饮水，故古人又称象岛。养马岛四面环水，岛上丘陵起伏，草木葱茏，海光山色，秀丽如画。海岛呈东北西南走向，地势南缓北峭，气候宜人，冬无严寒，夏无酷暑，有“东方夏威夷”之称。
俯瞰海岛，大自然的鬼斧神工，雕琢出这片仙山琼岛的清灵与俊秀：岛前海面宽阔，风平浪静；岛后群礁嶙峋，惊涛拍岸；东端碧水金沙，是优良浴场；西端水深浪小，成天然良港。透过观澜亭明丽的窗口，向四周眺望，只见海天一色，浑然天成，苍茫的水面上渔帆点点，千舟竞发犹如进入世外桃源。
岛上有一个白马雕塑，凌空腾飞、巍耸于50多米高的铁塔之上的巨大白马，这是养马岛的标志性建筑，周围是占地7.2万平方米的白马广场。广场四周松柏翠绿，花团锦簇；水景墙瀑布流泻；12生肖玉雕惟妙惟肖，栩栩如生；巨大的秦皇雕塑，让人依稀可见当年始皇帝的雄风。
天马广场东约1公里，就是占地19万平方米的养马岛赛马场。先后承接了全国马术赛、国际马联障碍赛、六运会马术赛等11次国内外重大体育比赛，不但是一处重要的体育场所，还成为独具特色的旅游景点。每天，养马岛都举行赛马活动，还开展骑马、古式马拉车、射箭、射击等活动。养马岛又成了闻名的体育赛场和旅游景点。
岛上丘陵起伏，草木葱茏，山光海色，秀丽如画，海岛呈东北西南走向，地势南缓北峭，岛前海面宽阔，风平浪静，岛后群礁嶙峋，惊涛拍岸；东端碧水金沙，优良浴场。西端水深浪小，天然良港。岛上气候宜人，冬无严寒，夏无酷暑，年平均气温11.8℃，素有“东方夏威夷”之美称。岛四周盛产海参、扇贝、鲍鱼、对虾、牡蛎、天鹅蛋等海产品，久负盛名。
岛上海、陆、空交通方便，环岛前路、环岛后路横贯全岛东西，通海路与烟威公路、滨海路相接，距烟台火车站、港口30公里，距烟台机场22公里，处于大连、青岛、烟台、威海四个沿海开放城市的交叉点上。岛西端建有万吨级泊位码头，乘船可通往广州、深圳、上海、大连等沿海各大城市。
