昆嵛山，横亘烟台、威海两地。主峰泰礴顶，海拔923米，为半岛东部最高峰。方圆百里，巍峨耸立，万仞钻天，峰峦绵延，林深谷幽，古木参天，多有清泉飞瀑，遍布文物古迹。神话传说中的海上仙山蓬莱、瀛州、方丈三座仙山都是从这里衍生出来的。北魏史学家崔鸿在《十六国春秋》里称昆嵛山为“海上诸山之祖”。
昆嵛山系闻名全国的一座道教名山。是全真教的发祥地。据《宁海州志》记载：自隋唐以来，昆嵛山便寺观林立，洞庵毗连，香火缭绕，朝暮不断。神话里的麻姑大仙在此得道。金大定七年（1167）全真鼻祖王重阳从陕西咸阳到昆嵛山，聚徒（丘处机等北七真人）讲道于烟霞洞中，创立了全真教。
昆嵛山系齐鲁大地的一座文化名山。早在春秋时期，秦始皇曾先后三次东巡昆嵛山区，寻长生不老药；西汉武帝步其后尘，入昆嵛山腹地，觅不老之术。古往今来，昆嵛山吸引了无以数计的帝王将相、文人墨客和僧家道众，他们或吟诗作赋，或铭碑刻石，或凿洞建庵，从而为昆嵛山增添了浓郁的文化色彩，使之成为一座天然的文化宝库。现在的既有汉代“永康”石刻，又有金元帝王敕封的“圣旨碑”、“懿旨碑”等铭记，还有铜碑、丘处机手书石刻等。
昆嵛山系享誉华夏的一座历史名山，是老革命根据地。早在1935年农历十一月四日，中共胶东特委就以昆嵛山为中心，领导发动了席卷胶东的“一一.四”暴动。暴动失败后，于德水等领导暴动幸存人员组成昆嵛山红军游击队，坚持斗争，从而为胶东革命保存了一支宝贵的火种。1937年12月4日，中共胶东特委以昆嵛山红军游击队为骨干力量，举行了闻名全国的天福山抗日武装起义，并组建了山东人民抗日救国军第三军。天福山起义后，“三军”挥师西下，横扫蓬黄掖，建立胶东抗日根据地，为赶走日本帝国主义，解放全中国，做出了不朽的贡献。如今的解放军27、31、41集团军，都是以昆嵛山红军游击队为基础发展壮大起来的。
著名作家冯德英的《苦菜花》、《迎春花》、《山菊花》描写的都是昆嵛山军民抗日战争的故事，并且电影外景拍摄基地选在这里。目前，11.4暴动指挥部遗址、帷幄洞（于德水养伤洞），外景拍摄地都成为红色旅游精品线路。
昆嵛山是令人神往的生态名山。是个天然生态博物馆，有植物品种达1000多种。有狼、梅花鹿等兽鸟200多种。是我国南北植物的交汇点，有分布于我国最北界的刺杉，最南界的红松，千年树龄的杜松、古银杏，还有颇具欣赏价值的鹅掌楸、华山松、美国火炬松等。大森林莽莽苍苍，景观千姿百态，30多年未打化学农药无虫灾，无污染，生态平衡，创国际先进水平。春天，绿草茵茵，山花烂漫，最宜赏花踏青；盛夏，浓荫蔽日，凉爽宜人，最适消夏避暑；金秋，漫山红叶，层林尽染；隆冬，万里雪飘，银装素裹，不用去遥远的冰城，便可领略北国风光。
昆嵛山群山环抱，地形复杂，沟谷曲折幽长，沟沟有水，处处有潭，潭瀑相连，佳景迭出，在山东较为罕见。公园生态优越，水质洁净，环境幽雅，气候宜人，空气清新，负氧离子含量极高，是北方难得的一处天然氧吧，是原始的、纯自然的、无污染的生态旅游区，是最适宜人类休闲度假的地方。

人们每当谈及昆嵛山时，常常与麻姑仙女的传说连在一起。
相传东汉时，有个姓麻的官吏，夜里做了个梦，自己从江水中垂钓上来一朵含苞欲放的荷花。早上醒来，妻子生下一女婴，貌美不凡，听力过人，三天后便可咿咿呀呀说话，一个多月后便能跟父母学读诗文，到了七八岁的时候，一把米从她手里抛撒到地上，便成了无数色彩绚丽的宝珠。
后来，帝王派她父亲监工修筑城墙，役工头用皮鞭迫使役工们每天从日出干到日落，又从日落干到鸡鸣方可休息。连干几天，役工们个个疲惫不堪，叫苦不迭。心善的麻姑于心不忍，为了让役工早点休息，她在天黑时便仿效公鸡叫，引起四邻的公鸡一齐啼叫。可是，此事很快被发现，其父盛怒之下，把她关进了牢狱。父母多次劝她认错，许之予荣华富贵，可她却始终不为之心动。后来，她将米粒化作宝珠，撒在地上引得贪婪的狱官追捡，趁机逃狱。其父率兵随后追赶，追至深谷边，麻姑走投无路，刚想投谷而去，王母娘娘巧过此处，于祥云中拔下玉簪扔下谷去，化作一道玉桥，麻姑得救。
过了深谷后，麻姑又在王母娘娘的指点下，乘清风白云走了九天九夜，来到海上一座仙山。这里云缭雾绕，松青柏翠；坡上桃林，果大味美；谷底泉水，穿过坚石巨岩，潺潺声似箫音笙韵。于是麻姑在此仙山净土处潜心修炼，并精心培育仙果，采集灵芝酿造美酒。数年后，麻姑修炼成仙，选择农历三月三，带着酿好的美酒和采摘的仙桃，升空去拜见王母娘娘，答谢救生点化之恩。
至今，昆嵛山中麻姑住过的洞、用过的"器具"依然可见。

昆嵛山国家森林公园为AAA级旅游景区，全国青少年科技教育基地，全国农业旅游示范点。已推出了5大旅游景区，开辟了森林观光、森林健身、森林浴、矿泉浴、康复度假、科普修学、攀岩探险等项目。
