You will know about more traditional kung fu styles that are popular in China after clicking here, meanwhile , all the kungfu styles mentioned below have their corresponding classes here.
Mantis Fist (Tanglang Quan)
Mantis Fist (Tanglang Quan) was very popular in the Han Dynasty. It has a long history, dating back to 200AD.
The Fist is very useful in close range combat, so it has another name called short-hit Fist, one of the pictographic fists.
Mantis Fist has a high value on improving learners' health. In the past, it was the most popular in the cities of Laiyang in Yantai and Qingdao. It's a well-known fact that Mantis Fist originated from Yantai. Gradually this kind of fist spread far and wide all over China. Now Mantis Fist has spread all over the world.
The creator was Wanglang. There is a legend about him. During the reign of the Chinese Han Dynasty, there was a very skilled warrior in Chinese Martial Arts, called Wang Lang. He spent much of his time roaming many famous Chinese places, during which he made lots of chivalrous friends and fortunately met some great masters who taught him great skills in Chinese Martial Arts. But he was devastated when he later lost in a Gongfu competition, and became very depressed. Lying under a big locust tree, he suddenly saw two praying mantises fight viciously for an insect. These two mantises were assuming various positions, such as Hooking, Pulling, Jumping, Defending and Locking. Wanglang was so immersed in the two Mantis movements that he felt very inspired. These thoughts of contemplation helped him to create an early basic structure of Mantis Fist. He continued to practice very hard and became highly skilled. He went back to challenge the man who had defeated him. This time, the man could not match Wanglang, so he won easily.
Afterwards, he integrated the classic parts of the most famous 18 Fists, as well as adopting some monkey movements into the form. The movement of Mantis Fist became perfected. Characteristically, it was fast and agile.
The traditional Mantis Fist shows great emphasis on the entirety of 6 aspects of Spirit, Bodymovements, Consciousness (Mind), Qi (Dantian, lower part of your abdomen), Strength and Variety of technique. All these aspects will help you achieve a high level, which means the external practice will be more harmony with the internal practice. Mantis Fist is based on the principle of being swift, steady, exact and varied. The moves include, Hooking, Picking (it is a kind of defending skill), Hanging and Beng Fist. The technique routes are mainly arc and round, while the body revolves in different movements (in order to dispel the hitting strength from the enemy.) 5 parts of your body, named Wufeng (head, shoulders, elbows, hips and knees), play an important role in a fight. Your hands and feet called Liangshao, will have strong power. With fist, several forms are going on simultaneously, so there is no the single form. When your adversary is a little further from you, you punch with a straight fist. If nearer, you try to control and attack using some forms of wrestling. Almost all parts of your body can attack the opponent, so you can shut all the retreat routes of your opponent. The moment the adversary defends, he has already been injured.
The main movement, "Yuhuang Movement," is unique to Mantis Fist. Its characteristic is to keep an energetic state, like a strong and fast arrow in a bow ready to shoot. All the forms are full of strong power and speed.
The content of this Fist includes 3 parts. They are "the forms of external practice", "the forms of internal practice"and "Elementary, Junior, Senior forms". You can learn from easy to complicated forms that cannot effectively be described by words. Only with a whole-heart can we get the essence of Mantis Fist. The advisable way for practicing it is through oral instruction. So we can only offer you a broad outline.
Weapons include the single sword, double swords, stick, spear and etc.
Taiji Quan (Tai Chi)
Taiji is a kind of martial art which uses soft strength to restrain the opponent's strong power. It is also one of the three excellent internal martial arts (Xingyi, Taiji and Bagua).
"Taiji" is a technical term from Chinese traditional philosophy, translating as "origin of the universe" and "supreme and unique".
A widespread legend has been passed down about Taiji Fist. In the Chinese Ming Dynasty, there was an outstanding man named Zhang Sanfeng, who excelled in Martial Arts. He had an unusual quality to him and looked down upon on fame and wealth. One year, he had a competition with a man who was extremely strong. Zhang Sanfeng couldn't defeat him with external force. In order to defeat the man, Zhang put all his effort into the research of many Chinese martial arts. Ultimately, Zhang Sanfeng created the new Fist. In the second competition, he took the new fist and used a distinctive technique to defeat his opponent; namely, he shrewdly used the man's own power to defeat him. This technique immediately impressed people and gradually, Taiji Quan became famous along with this story.
The main principle of Taiji Fist is that with the soft strength, you restrain the opponent's strong power, and with the skill of this fist, you shrewdly take your adversary's strength and use it against them. Taiji Fist is therefore very effective in actual combat.
Taiji Fist is also remarkably beneficial for improving the learner's health. In Chinese modern society, it is suitable for everyone, from kids to the elderly. It is very popular in China.
Rules of practice:
No.1 Keep in mind that the "Qi" circulating in the arteries and veins mutually adjusts to the steps and movements of your hands, eyes and body.
No.2 All of your movements and Forms are directed by your consciousness.
No.3 Integrate adjustments naturally between your breath and forms, and take everything naturally.
It has been acknowledged that training this fist is very useful for building body strength, curing illnesses, cultivating your moral character and prolonging your life.
Nowadays there are 5 sects of famous Taiji Fists, which are Chenshi Taiji, Sunshi Taiji, Wushi Taiji ,Yangshi Taiji and Wushi Taiji (different).
Bagua Palm (Bagua Zhang)
Bagua Palm, also called "Bagua Yousheng Lianhuan Palm," was created by Donghaichuan, in Wen'an county, Hebei province. It is one of three Neijia Fists (Neijia Fist means fists that mainly focus on the training and refinement of your spirit, internal energy and potential). The two main elements in Bagua are the interaction between the palm and feet movements. It combines the internal and concentration of breath with the external form of movements.
Donghaichuan was born in the 18th years of Jiaqing emperor in Qing Dynasty. It was said that he became an apprentice to an old Taoist in Xuehua Mountain in Southern China. His master spent 10 years teaching him a kind of peculiar but marvelous Martial Art. Afterwards, his master gave him a book named "Heluluoji" and told him to study it in great detail. With inspiration from this book and "Yi" theory, he creatively put the scattered techniques into a set of completed Gongfu movements, which became what is now known as Bagua Palm.
The movements of Bagua Palm are very soft and agile, making it easy to turn around or move forward like snake to hit the opponent's lower part. With quick movements, a Bagua practitioner can cope with several enemies simultaneously.
The central tenet of Bagua is understanding the transfer of movement between the stances of body and palm positions.
The basic patterns of palm are: single-changing palm, double-changing palm, double-hitting palm, penetrating palm, pushing upward palm, turning around palm, revolving palm and swaying palm. The shapes of this palm are: facing upward palm, fingers downward palm, erecting palm, penetrating palm, chopping palm, pushing upward and so on .The basic steps: twist inside of your feet, twist outside your feet, moving with large steps, stepping from a up-position to a down-position.
In the past, Bagua Palm was used as a method of fighting in combat. However, nowadays, many people practice to improve their health and live a long live.
Qigong (Chi Kung)
When speaking of Qi Gong, firstly, we should understand what the essence of "Qi's". There are many kinds of "Qi," but Chinese traditional culture emphasizes that the most basic one is "YuanQi" - the origin of all living things. YuanQi is an engine or an anchor for human's growth, metabolism and physical development. YuanQi also plays an important role in defending illnesses. So Chinese medicine teaches that the life all depends on the circulation of Qi.
Qi Gong depends on the theory of "Qi". If practiced properly, it will be very useful for curing illness. It will help you effectively maintain YuanQi, promote your circulatory system, and the healthy functioning of your blood.
Qi Gong is founded on a whole life outlook, related to the law of nature. When practicing it, you mainly take the initiative of your own consciousness .The content includes 3 adjustments: to adjust your mind in peace, to adjust your body into the best condition and to adjust your breath in balance .If you keep training regularly and persisting, gradually the function of many parts of your body will be greatly enhanced and step by step, your health condition will be improved. The practice is able to improve quality of life, and naturally transmute and develop a deeper awareness of subtle energies.
The unity of Qi Gong, Chinese Medicine and Chinese Martial Arts is considered one of the most important parts of Chinese traditional culture. More and more people from all over the world are beginning to learn about them and enjoy them.
The unique benefits of Qi Gong for people¡¯s health has been acknowledged by modern science.
There are many sects of Qi Gong. According to Chinese history, Qi Gong was passed down among the people. In time, experience accumulated and several famous sects became the most popular: Yi sect, Ru sect, Tao sect, Buddha sect and Wu sect. However, all sects stressed an importance on 4 aspects: keeping healthy, cultivating one¡¯s moral character, making clear one¡¯s consciousness about life and the combination between the three aspects as the great essence of Chinese Martial Arts. Yi sects focuses on keeping healthy to prolong life; Buddha sect values the clear mind for the life and Wu sect mainly concentrates on the skills of Martial Arts.
Sanda (Chinese kickboxing)
Sanda roughly translates as "actual combat". In the past, Chinese called it "technique fighting" or "striking". The simple concept of Sanda is two people fighting against each other without weapons. Sanda evolves from a combination of traditional Chinese martial arts fist forms with its own distinctive essence and practical style. It is one of the main Chinese Martial Arts, and has a unique and distinctive style. In the year of 1979, it became an event in the "National Technique Competition" in China. The four attacking methods are Kicking, Hitting, Wrestling, and Controlling.
Sanda combines using skill in pose and technique. Sanda Pose is normally called a "ready" stance, where the fighter is prepared for combat. Training in Sanda can help you keep your body in powerful condition, and develops the quickest of reflexes. Making use of fast movements to attack or defend, the fighter leaves little exposure of their body, very effective in protecting the key parts of your body.
There are two poses in Sanda: Left and Right Pose. For the left pose, one of your feet stands out, the other, behind. The distance between the heel of the forward foot and the tiptoe of backward foot is the same width as the shoulders. The sole of your left foot completely touches the ground, while the heel of your right foot rises up a little. Your knees naturally bend a little. The center of gravity of your body moves to the right, the chest moves up and your stomach folds inwards. The left arm twists inside about 90 degrees, while the center of the left fist moves parallel to the tip of your nose. Your right arm twists inwards about 45 degrees, and your two fists come in front of your neck. The elbows keep naturally vertical or a little inwards, and your chin stays is a little lower. All the time, your eyes focus on the upper body of your adversary.
The skill of Sanda is in combining movements of Step, Fist, Leg, Knee, Wrestling, Defending and Constant attacking. The right and left poses remain the same, vice-versa.
Step:This dictates the direction of body movement (left, right, forward, backward and so on) in a fight. Agility and quick foot movements are not only the key to keep balance, but gives superiority in attacking and defending. There are 9 kinds of steps, which are forward step, backward step, transferring step, Ce kua step, Nei step, Gai step, Cha step, Dian step and Ji step.
Fist skill: There are 5 main kinds of Fist movements, which are Straight fist, Bai fist, Hooking fist, Chopping fist and Whipping fist. The skill of fists is in the interchange between fast speed, flexibility and variety. An effective fist can hit a target at the shortest distance and with the fastest speed. In Sanda, the use of fist movements combined with other skills makes for a very effective fighting style.
Leg movements: They are divided into three parts, which are Stretching movements, Straight and Swaying movements and Sweeping movements. Subtle movements of flexibility are very important in leg and kicking movements. Leg movements are used when the opponent is at more of a distance. Also this kind of attack can conceal targeting key parts of the opponent's body. When these movements are used, remember to be fast, powerful and exact.
Wrestling movements: Wrestling movements are used ultimately, to floor the opponent in Sanda. To do this, the fighter must use fast and subtle technique. When taking down an opponent, you must be quick and decisive, never leaving any chance of defense.
Knee movements: Knee kicks can be used to target the abdomen or chest of your opponent. This movement is very powerful and can easily injure. It is much easier to use when contesting at a close distance.
Defending movements: Defending movements can protect yourself, control and reduce the attacking strength of your enemy. In so doing, you can situate yourself in a more dominant position. The ultimate aim is to be able to effectively combine both defending and attacking. The purpose of exact and skillful defending is to help protect yourself, and create better positioning for the next assault.
Constant attack: requires a succession of coordinated movements at a fast pace. When employing these movements, a fighter will also make use of faking attacks to throw their opponent. With this, an adversary will suffer assaults from all directions and will have difficulty in defending. Every movement must flow from the other.
Sanda is a very practical sport, applicable to real combat. Practicing Sanda will cultivate a distinctive character; one of intelligence, strength, courage, strong-mindedness, flexibility and decisiveness.
Xingyi Quan
Xingyi Fist is one of the three most famous Chinese traditional Fists forms. It originated from southern Song Dynasty, and has nearly 1000 years of history. Based on a broad and profound philosophy Xingyi is founded on theoretical and scientific principles.
There are different versions of its origin and founder. Most widely accepted is that, during wartime in Southern Song Dynasty, wounded soldiers couldn¡¯t train properly in GongFu because of their injuries. However, the soldiers were needed in battle; they had to train somehow and improve their skills in Gong Fu. With his generals, Yue Fei, a distinguished and loyal marshal, began to develop the basic shapes of the Xingyi fist forms for the soldiers. They practiced this fist for a long time, taking inspiration from observing the movements of animals and combining it with the principles of Wuxing. Xingyi fist developed into a martial art of moderate movements, one that could combine the internal and external styles through inner control.
Guo Yunsheng developed the style to completion and so is generally acknowledged as the modern founder. The name of Xingyi Fist was given by him.
The technique and theory can be summed up by Wuxing (the 5 elements): metal, wood, water, fire and earth. The content and theory of the 5 elements, based on traditional Chinese philosophy, inspired the Xingyi Fist and weapon forms. The 5 elements correspond to the 5 forms of Xingyi Fist: Chopping Fist, Beng Fist, Zuan Fist, Pao Fist and Heng Fist.
In addition, these are 12 shapes of technique: Dragon, Tiger, Monkey, Horse, Cork, Pear, Sparrow hawk, Swallow, Eagle, Snake, Cat and Crane.
The movements emphasize 6 combinations, which includes 3 internal combinations and 3 external combinations. The "3 Internals"are namely the combination between "right effort"and consciousness (mind), between the consciousness and the "Internal Qi" and between the "Internal Qi"and Internal strength. The "3 Externals" are the combinations between the hands and the feet, between the elbows and knees and between the shoulders and arms. The main points are having the agile waist of a dragon, the strong shoulder of a bear, the nimble way of an eagle and make sound like thunder.
Xingyi is a unity between the external forms and internal energy. It focuses on Mind dominating Qi, the physical movements and mind join together and Qi cooperating with strength. Through incorporating the physical forms, the concentration of mind with the combination of the internal and external practice, Xingyi is a very effective combat technique. However, it can also improve the learner's health, cultivate the soul and prolong one's life.
Xingyi Fist has several branches, such as Yuyi Fist, Dacheng Fist, etc. which have become famous in their own right. In recent years, Xingyi Fist has developed both in China and abroad. More and more people from all over the world are now learning it.
Baji Fist (Baji Quan)
The full name of Baji Fist is "Kaimen Baji Quan", which means the mysterious changes between Yin and Yang, which ultimately ends with eternity. It has a long history. Over the years, it has been gradually refined, and now has a distinctive style, with unique character and form. In each era, there have been some outstanding men who have mastered Baji. It has had a profound influence on the development of Chinese Martial Arts.
This kind of fist began from the Meng village in Cang County (now the autonomous Hui clan county). In the fifth year of the Yongzheng emperor in Qing Dynasty, a great but strange man, called Lai, who was skilled in Martial Arts used to roam the village. He found Wu Zhong practicing Chinese Fist very hard. He gave 15-year-old Wu Zhong instruction and taught him martial arts. Wu Zhong asked Lai to come and stay at his home and learnt from him for three years. During this period, Lai also taught him other fists and Spears. The day before Lai left, he gave him a secret book on Martial arts. Nowadays, there are many records about Lai in Chinese history books.
Eight years passed and Wu Zhong went to the Shaolin Temple. There, he took on wooden models of people and monkeys that disguised attacking weapons. Many accomplished martial artists had been previously wounded by this challenge. But Wu Zhong entered this temple three times and to people's great surprise, he wasn't injured once. He quickly made a name for himself all over Southern China and his unusual story spread out as far as the Qing Dynasty Palace. A martial official named Aixinjueluo.Yun requested him to attend the palace. This official showed him great respect and challenged him to compete with him. They agreed that he who drew the first blood, would lose.
During the duel, the official was hardly aware that a small trace had been left in his eyebrow when Wu Zhong humbly stopped the competition. This victory helped Wu gain another great name: "Wu Divine Sword". Wu Zhong became even more famous than before.
Baji Fist focuses on actual combat. As a martial art, it is characterized by its development of strong power and force.
The basic theory includes 6 "Kai"and 8 "Hitting-Forms". 6 Kai means taking different ways of form, which are DING, BAO, TI, KUA, KAN TI and Chan. Each points to the different ways of practicing the fist forms and their application. 8 Hitting-Forms corresponds to the 8 parts of your body (head, arms, elbows, hands, hips, knees, feet and nails.), which can cooperate well with each other to produce many unpredictable moves, especially in actual combat.
Wing Chun
Wing Chun is one of the ancient southern fist form style of Chinese Kung fu. At first it was developed in Guangdong and Fujian (two southern provinces of China) about 250-300 years ago.
There are many stories of its origin. The most likely is the story below:
Wing Chun was created by a female Shaolin Master called Wu Mei (Ng Mui). She was also a great master in Shaolin white crane style. In the Qing Dynasty (1644—1911), the Southern Shaolin Temple was set on fire by the government. Five great Shaolin Martial Artists (Wu Mei, Zhi Shan, Bai Mei, Feng Dao De and Miao Xian) managed to fight the enemy and escape. In order to avoid the Persecution for the government, Wu Mei hide in the DaLiang Mountain, which is situated on the boarder of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. In this duration, she kept practicing Kung fu; occasionally she saw a snake and crane fight. This enlightened her and she created her own unique style on this basis. Later on, she passed this style to Yan Yong Chun (Yim Wing Chun). After Wing Chun gained this, she systematized it and widely spread the form. Then people named this style Wing Chun to memorize her.
The main fist forms in Wing Chun are twelve free forms (12 San Shi), Xiao Nian Tou, seeking Bridge(Xun Qiao), Biao Zhi, wooden dummies and empty poles. The weapons forms are Dragon Pole, Six-and-a-Half Point Pole, Longpole, double butterfly swords. The main qigong is Shengqi Guiyuan Chikung.
The basic hand movements are San Bang Shou, Cuoshou, liaoshou, Popaishou, Chenqiao and Nianshou(sticky hand).
The basic steps are Siping Step, Sanzi Step, Zhui Step, Gui Step, and Duli Step etc.
The training equipment used are mirror, punch bag, candle, crate circle, chopsticks, thousands layer paper, and wooden dummy.
Wing Chun is a style, which combines internal forces and close proximity punching together. Its sparring moves are like the struggle between snake and crane. The block moves are like the nimble and winding snake while the attack moves are like the fierce and fast crane moving at an amazing speed, or like a tiger swooping at its prey.
Wing Chun is based on sparring, with the characteristic of various movements, practical use, explosive power. Its typical moves are Da San Ce, Xiao Fu Yang, Geng Lan Tan Bang, Mo Dang Lu, Shen Shi JI Lao, Qu Shou Liu Zhong, Da, Jie, Chen, Biao, Bang, Wan Zhi, Nian, Mo, Yun Dang, Tou, Lou and Er Zi Qian Yang Ma. Wing Chun is an internal Kung fu form, which uses a keen insight into touch. This allows you a greater understanding of your opponent, with the correct release of explosive power in your sparring.
The different styles of Wing Chun being taught now is Ye Wen Wing Chun fist, Hong Ji fist, Cen Neng Wing Chun Fist, Yuan Qi Shan Wing Chun Fist, Gu Lao Pian Shen Wing Chun Fist, Hong Chuan (red boat) Wing Chun Fist, Bao Hua Lian Wing Chun Fist, Peng Nan Wing Chun Fist. The famous Martial arts star Bruce Lee (Li Xiao Long) once followed Master Ye Wen and studied Wing Chun systematically. We can say that Jeet Kune Do, which Bruce Lee created, closely combines Wing Chun with the other martial art styles he studied creating the main core and foundations of his fighting principals.

Yan Xia Cave
YanXia Cave is made from the towering rock which was formed naturally. It is the original place of QuanZhen group of Taoism. In 1167, WangChongYang (the founder of QuanZhen group of Taoism) came from XianYang to the east ZhongNan Mountain. He gathered disciples and taught them Taoism in the cave. There were seven disciples including QiuChuJi. They were called the Seven Immortals on the Sea. Now their stone statues, bronze tablets, imperial edict tablets, well and tombs are protected.
This area is the birth place of Taoism. There is a mountain cave not far from school (called Yan Xia cave) where it is said the founder of Taoism meditated for many years. There are eight statues, "The Eight Immortals," of important Taoists inside this cave today as a mark of respect.
Ma Gu Temple
Yue Gu Temple was the place for MaGu's meditation. In 1116, emperor Hui Zong gave the title of Immortal XuMiao to MaGu. From then on she was worshipped by the local people. She became the symbol of long life, health, wit and purity. BiXiaYuanJun came here from Tai Mountain and built 72 YueGu palaces and temples with 108 rooms. Some local scenic spots include MaGu Temple, MaGu tomb, SanGuan palace, CaiShen palace, YueLao ancestral temple, Hua spring and BiXia pavillion.
Nine Dragon Pools
Nine-dragons pool On the north of KunYu Mountain there is a steep cliff. In the middle of the cliff, there are nine differently sized natural stone ponds. The diameter of the biggest one is 6 meters, 3 meters deep.
It looks like a dragon is climbing the mountain. The legend says that there was a dragon who broke the law in heaven, after which he was banished to this mountain. The water in the ponds is clear, so you can see the bottom. The Nine Dragon waterfall is 1000 meters high. A waterfall of this height is rare in ShanDong. The main scenic spots include the Nine Dragon waterfall, the Dragon King palace, Heaven Pond and Immortal Stone.

The academy provides instruction to beginner as well as more advanced students who are already proficient in martial arts and seeking additional or higher-level training.

c. Students who have already seriously trained in martial arts for several years or more can expect to learn and perform some of the more difficult kung fu movements, combat skills, higher internal kung fu as well as developing the underlying morality of the martial arts. We also welcome advanced students wishing to learn through challenging the masters.
d. Don't worry about age holding you back if you are middle aged or elderly. Many Chinese martial arts are suitable for middle age and old age people, such as Ancient Qi Gong (Ba duan jin, yi jin jing, Five animal style and meditation that is not only good for health, but also helpful for your level of Kung Fu and for healing illnesses), Tai Chi fist / straight sword / fan, Xingyi fist, Bagua palm, Ba Chi fist and mantis boxing. Training schedules and exercises are customized to fit to you, according to your needs and abilities. There is no maximum of age to come, but there is minimum of it. You have to get an escort if you are not able to travel alone.
e. Longer training periods (after you have learnt for 5 years here) are available for those who find they want to advance their skills to higher levels in martial arts. However, the decision is made by the masters as to whether they will extend training periods, according to the student's apparent skills, trustworthiness, potential and interest shown.
2. Preparation before You Come to the Academy:
a. Please fill the application form and pay the application fee according to the website 1-6 months before you come to the academy. We will confirm your information after we get your application and application fee and will make some preparations for your arrival.
b. on Visa: You can apply for a tourist visa before you come to China. If you need any help extending it, we can help you extend it to more than 10 months when you get to the academy. We can also help you change your visa to a student one if necessary, year by year. However, please be aware that the maximum duration for a stay in this Academy is five years.
Many students want to get a student visa when they come here, and it is a requirement that you obtain an invitation letter and the JW202 form (when pplying for the student visa). Once you apply for your student visa the cademy would help send out both of these two forms to you. However, it can be very difficult for us to get the JW202 and is an extremely lengthy process. In the past we have also had some problems with people who in the end for what ever reason didn’t turn up. Unfortunately we had already spent a lot of time and money applying for their JW202 forms. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you apply for a tourist visa instead which really is the easiest way. If you need any help applying for your tourist visa, such as with the invitation letter, please let us know and we will fax it to you or send it to you through the post office.
